The Role of Parents and Caregivers in Supporting Children with Congenital Heart Defects

Every year, thousands of families across India face a heartbreaking reality: their child needs life-saving medical treatment, but they simply cannot afford it.

In such situations, charitable giving becomes more than just financial support, it becomes a source of hope. When people choose to donate to charity in India for medical causes, they help bridge the gap between a child’s need for treatment and a family’s ability to access it.

In this blog, we’ll delve into the real impact when you donate to charity in India and how individuals in the United States can support life-changing causes through donations from abroad.

About Genesis Foundation

Genesis Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports underprivileged children suffering from congenital heart defects (CHD). We provide financial resources for heart treatment for underprivileged children within the age group of 0-18 years and from families with a monthly income that doesn’t exceed $209 USD.

For many families, the cost of treating congenital heart defects is simply beyond their reach. Delayed treatment can lead to severe health complications and, in some cases, become life-threatening. An India devoid of CHD related deaths’ is a dream that we at Genesis Foundation are pursuing, one child at a time.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: no child should be denied a chance at life due to lack of resources. Through the support of your donations, we continue to help children access timely treatment and move toward healthier futures.

What Happens When You Donate to Help Children in India

When you make a donation for poor children in India, you:

  1. Support multiple tests, scans, and consultations that are required to assess a particular congenital heart condition. These preliminary tests ensure timely and accurate treatment planning.
  2. Make it possible for us to organize screening camps in the most underserved regions across India. These camps ensure that we identify children in need and connect them to the right treatment at the right time. With the help of the donations we get, we have organized over 25 camps stretching from Leh to Kanyakumari.
  3. Help fund congenital heart defect treatments and surgeries at our partner hospitals that families may otherwise be unable to afford.
  4. Help cover costs for post-operative care, medications, and follow-up visits. For instance, we stay connected with the children for up to 3 years after the intervention to see how their lives are changing.
  5. Ensure treatment at top hospitals, where there is a specialized team of experienced pediatric cardiologists and surgeons. At Genesis Foundation, we have onboarded 25+ leading hospitals across India that follow all necessary measures to ensure that every child gets the best possible care.

The Real Impact of Your Donation

While donations help fund treatment that can save a child’s heart, their true impact extends far beyond that. It becomes the reason a child gets a second chance at life.

The Role of Parents and Caregivers in Supporting Children with Congenital Heart Defects

For us, the journey doesn’t end with the surgery that’s where a new phase begins. We stay closely connected with the family after the treatment and make sure the child comes for regular follow-ups. We understand that for many families, this is not easy there can be emotional and financial challenges. So, wherever we can, we try to support them in the best possible way, so that the child does not miss these important check-ups. We continue this engagement for up to three years. During this time, we try to understand how the child is really doing, not just medically, but in life. Are they able to go to school? Are they happy, growing well, and living like other children? These are the things that truly matter to us.

Over time, we start seeing the real impact. Children who once struggled to breathe are now going to school, doing well, and living a near normal, happy lives. Some even grow up wanting to give back or become a doctor – a life returned full circle.

Donate to Help Children in India: Real Lives, Real Impact

Here’re some of the stories of our beneficiaries. Their journeys are a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact that donations can have:

Pranay (Name Changed)

Pranay (name changed) was 17 years old and was a late presentation case, experiencing high fever, breathlessness, chest pain and excessive sweating when his congenital heart defect was detected. He underwent a device closure of an Atrial Septal Defect in Delhi. Today, he is 24 years old, happily married and working as a teacher, while also pursuing his B.Ed. Degree.

Reena (Name Changed)

Reena (name changed) was 12 years old and suffered from breathlessness, diagnosis came much later for her as the family went in circles to find answers. In 2015, she was finally diagnosed with a rare and complex heart condition, corrected CTGA, pulmonary atresia along with VSD. Her father, an auto driver, could not meet the high costs of surgery. We supported the intervention and today she’s thriving! We observed through post recovery that she was selected for her school’s Karate team and today, she’s completed her engineering and is now pursuing Data Science in Coimbatore.

Vaanika (Name Changed)

A ventricular septal defect survivor, Vaanika (name changed) from Delhi was operated on when she was thirteen years old. She had regular complaints of breathlessness during any form of activity which went away after intervention. Vaanika kept up with her follow-ups and went ahead to pursue a B.A. (Hons) from S.O.L Delhi University. As of today, she’s started her own organization All Education Foundation and teaches less privileged children.
