Why I Chose to Intern at Genesis Foundation- An NGO for Child Heart Surgery

The stark identifier of adulting: becoming a summer intern. As a student, the idea of a corporate or office environment was foreign to me. Summer break usually meant binge-watching and endless snacks run to the fridge. Working was the last thing on my mind. However, as summer passed something sparked in me- to go out there and work. I wanted to spend my time doing something meaningful.

The first plan of action was to find out where my interests lay. I had previously enjoyed the experience of volunteering at an NGO teaching underprivileged students. I wished to make a difference whilst building my professional skills.

When I first started looking for internships, I felt torn between roles that would look good on my resume and opportunities that felt meaningful. In one swift Google search, Genesis Foundation popped up, an NGO working for congenital heart defects. When I opened their website, I was mesmerized and couldn’t stop reading about the foundation’s work and educating myself about congenital heart defect (CHD). I desired to find a way to align my interests while advocating for a cause, and Genesis Foundation seemed like the perfect fit. Everything that happened after, to currently writing this blog, was pure luck, a shot in the dark.

I feel honored to be given the opportunity to work here. I wanted to be around like-minded individuals, who care about making a difference. Genesis Foundation, an NGO for child heart surgery, brings a rare mix of inclusivity and dedication that not only looks after children’s health but touches their hearts too. I also wanted a structured, professionally managed NGO where passion truly meets purpose. The conversations that I had with my manager, Charu Dhasmana, before joining, made me sense the cultural match and I knew this was the right place for me. I am currently volunteering as well as doing content writing, and I am so grateful to be part of this journey to spread awareness for this noble foundation and its cause.

What was intriguing to me was how Genesis Foundation and I were connected way back. In middle school, I had attended the Rhythm and Blues Festival 2017, completely unaware that I would one day be working for the very organization. This feels like a full-circle moment. Interning at Genesis Foundation provides a multitude of experiences from meeting and interacting with children and families affected by CHD, blog writing, to helping at events and clinics. Such opportunities help you grow not only professionally, but also personally as it deepens your understanding of the cause you are working for.

Not only is Genesis Foundation holistic in its approach to advocacy and treating patients, but also in its approach to involvement. What impresses me is how Genesis Foundation follows modern functionalities in corporate, fundraising, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) while being rooted in old-school NGO values. Genesis Foundation is an NGO for heart treatment in India, and it truly embodies what a forward-thinking, impactful organization should be. It is based on hospital partnerships, partnerships with donors, patients, and the medical board. It provides holistic care to the patient and their family, from financial to emotional support. It’s not doing facetious work; instead, it’s doing grassroots development from the bottom up.

I take inspiration from the powerful children who have survived CHD and the ones who are fighting it. My heart goes out to the ones who have lost their lives because of it, and to their families.  My learnings as a college student, who is still experimenting and figuring out life, is that in any venture that I undertake, I will be socially responsible and make a difference through my work.
