My First Hospital Visit: An Unforgettable Experience

I had my first hospital visit interning for Genesis Foundation. Hospital visits imply that the team of Genesis Foundation visits the child they are supporting after the child heart surgery in Delhi. I travelled to Faridabad along with the team by car to visit a child at one of the partner hospitals of Genesis Foundation. The workers there were friendly and gave us a tour of the hospital, a terrific facility with large crowds getting the care they needed. We were taken to the ICU and had to adhere to the safety guidelines before entering. We put on the scrubs, hairnet, face mask and disposable shoe covers to ensure safety for both the child and us.

The child’s name was Jatin (name changed), and he was a three-year-old boy who had a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD). The doctors were cordial, making sure that Jatin’s needs were met and his recovery would be a smooth one. I felt immense sorrow for Jatin as no child should have to go through surgeries and pain at such a young age. I felt much better after seeing how he was provided with top tier care and even received toys to comfort him. The Genesis Foundation team spoke to him with such tenderness and understanding that I just knew he was in the best hands. There is no sugarcoating what children with CHD endure but it does make a difference when they are provided with love and support.

I experienced that firsthand and I am very thankful for that. My heart could not take the big eyes looking at me, completely unaware of what was going on inside his body. He seemed tired and in need of familiar faces. I still cannot fathom how the Genesis Foundation team brushed their emotions aside and smiled with ease, giving Jatin the strength he needed.   His mother visited him in the ICU, and you could see Jatin’s eyes light up upon seeing his mother. She was very thankful to the doctors, nurses and Genesis Foundation for their help and endless support. She also said that she wanted to enroll her son in school after he recovers, which gave us the hope that he will lead an ordinary life like most kids who seek help from Genesis Foundation.

Later, we met with the father who seemed worried for his son but was comforted by the help of the foundation and the support from the hospital. We had a conversation with one of the doctors there and he explained how CHD affects children. It was bewildering to see how common it is and how the types differ from one another.

Needless to say, I learned quite a bit for my biology exam! In totality, the whole experience was very fulfilling and definitely changed something in me. I feel much more grateful for the things I have and seeing children with CHD in real time really makes me want to pursue visits like this in the near future. Giving does not take a lot, and I hope everyone reading this considers supporting Genesis Foundation and other NGOs that truly make a difference.

This year also marks 25 years of Genesis Foundation. To mark this special milestone, the team created a commemorative film that captures the heart of the organization’s work and journey over the years.

The film offers a closer look at how the foundation functions. It also reflects the human stories behind the work: the children, families, doctors, supporters and the team who together make every successful treatment possible.
