A Volunteer Opportunity in India: Supporting Children with Heart Defects

Over 2,00,000 children born every year are born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) in India. Some of them come from families who cannot afford to get to a visit of a Pediatric Cardiologist, not alone get to pay for a heart surgery! To bridge this gap where a child could be given the opportunity to live a life and the families not being able to reach there due to their financial status, organizations such as Genesis Foundation come in the picture. This is where I got my volunteering opportunity in India.

Why I Chose to Volunteer for an NGO in India?

I have always wanted to do my bit for a social cause and Genesis Foundation was the organization that finally got me started. Founded in Gurugram 25 years ago, it solves a single, well identified problem – children born with heart defects, children whose families cannot afford the surgery needed. This isn’t charity, it’s a specific, addressable gap and an organizational structure to close it by focusing on one child at a time.

Genesis Foundation was started by parents who lost their newborn to a heart defect, and that origin informs everything about how the organization works; it’s personal rather than procedural. Ever since its founding, the foundation has enabled thousands of children by getting them life-saving cardiac treatment. Not just that, the foundation ensures it works simultaneously with families whose, often, monthly income is $209 USD or less.

What Volunteering Opportunity in India Involves?

The foundation involves multiple categories, and each volunteer can choose to volunteer for an NGO in India depending on their skills and time.

• Screening and Awareness camps: These camps are conducted in smaller towns and remote districts where cardiac care is hard to access – help families recognize the early signs of CHD before it is too late.
• Supporting Families throughout he Process: Genesis Foundation ensures that from paperwork to follow-ups, everything continues for years after a child’s surgery since recovery does not end when the operation does.
• Writing: Volunteers can write for the foundation’s website and help spread awareness about congenital heart defects.
• Fundraising and Outreach: This is done by helping spread the word, whether through community events, social media platforms, corporate partnerships or simply talking to people about why this cause matters.

None of these require a volunteer to have a medical background. You don’t have to be present on ground. You can apply from anywhere around the globe. Although what I needed is consistency and genuine care by showing up, following through and remembering that behind every case file is a family that is scared and hoping someone will help.

Volunteering for an NGO in India, especially one working on child healthcare, teaches you things you done get from a desk job. Since you learn how much of a difference early detection makes. You learn how a family’s entire life can hinge on whether a screening camp happens to visit their district this year. And you learn, quietly, how much a small but sustained effort can add make an invaluable difference. For instance, a few hours spent a week, a shared social post, a fundraiser you helped organize, all of these provide opportunities to be a part of something bigger than yourself.

It also changes how you think of giving back since it’s easy to assume volunteering for social causes implies big, dramatic gestures. In reality, most of the impact comes from unglamorous and repeated work such as filling in a form correcting, research work or even showing up to a camp in a place nobody heard of.
