How NGOs and Charities Are Helping Children with Hole in the Heart Get Free Treatment?
May 1, 2025 | Contributed by Charu Dhasmana
A hole in the heart is a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD). These defects are of different types and vary in severity from mild to complex. One of the common methods for treating heart defects is open heart surgery. However, with the advancement in technology, doctors are now able to provide hole in heart treatment to the patients. These are non-invasive procedures performed in the Cath Lab. However, the average cost of such treatments lies in the range of Rs. 2,00,000- 4,00,000, and for many, access to these life-saving treatments remains an unattainable dream. Thankfully, NGOs across the country are stepping up to change this reality. In this blog, we will cover how NGOs and charities are helping children with hole in the heart get free treatment.
Bridging the Gap: The Role of NGOs and Charitable Organizations
NGOs are indispensable because they fill systemic voids that render millions uncared for. They step in to bridge the gap between a child in need and life-saving treatment. These organizations raise funds, build networks with hospitals, and advocate for early screening. They work tirelessly to support children who otherwise would be in despair, demonstrating NGOs are an indispensable lifeline for families to get through a tough health care system. Many NGOs also organize screening camps, especially in rural and underserved areas, to identify heart defects early.
Genesis Foundation: Giving Hope, Healing Hearts
Among the organizations doing exemplary work in this space is Genesis Foundation, a non-profit that supports child heart treatment of underprivileged children (0–18 years old) born with congenital heart defects (CHD). What sets us apart is its commitment to full transparency and impact. We provide financial assistance to families whose monthly income is ₹20,000 or less, ensuring that economic limitations do not stand in the way of a child’s survival. One of the most unique aspects of Genesis Foundation is that 100% of all donations from individual donors go directly towards a child’s treatment, with zero allocation towards administrative costs. This ensures that every rupee donated reaches the child in need.
Stories of Impact: Real Lives Transformed
We create real social impact by ensuring that our support makes a difference in the lives of children and their families. Take the story of two-year-old Harsh (name changed) who had been unwell since birth—struggling with recurrent infections, poor weight gain, and feeding difficulties. He was diagnosed with a serious heart defect, Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), requiring urgent surgery. For his parents, the cost seemed out of reach. With the help of our generous donor, we were able to provide a life-saving treatment to Harsh. Today, he is healthy, active, and medication-free, full of energy and smiles. His story is just one of thousands made possible by timely support and generosity.
Collaborating for Change: Hospitals, Donors, and Volunteers
The work of Genesis Foundation, a child heart treatment, is made possible through strong partnerships—with leading hospitals, corporates, and a dedicated community of volunteers. Over the years, we have partnered with the best hospitals, doctors, and CSR donors across India. Renowned hospitals such as Apollo, Fortis, Sarvodaya, Narayana Health and many others have partnered up with us to support as many children as possible. We also have a range of CSR partners onboard, like- GE Healthcare, HDFC Ergo, George Clinical and SBI Life. Our volunteers work tirelessly to give children with CHD a second chance at life. With the help of their CSR, hospital partners, and volunteers, we have helped over 5000+ children across the country.
