The hand that rocks the cradle, rules our heart too. Mothers are the backbone in a child’s journey called life. They are all weather supporters for their kids. There is a deep faith in their love and prayers for their children. As an NGO working for congenital heart disease, we at Genesis Foundation, come across mothers who have time and again motivated us showing us that the power of a mother’s love can move mountains.

A Mother’s Love can Move Mountains

The journey of a family whose child is diagnosed with CHD is no less than a roller coaster ride. There is an influx of emotions and challenges that a family in general and mothers especially have to go through. Mothers have been the emotional backbone of the child, and they have to put a courageous front for the sake of the child even when they themselves are vulnerable in that particular situation. She has the toughest struggle to go through, especially when the child is an infant or neonate as they cannot express their pain or emotions and mothers find themselves at the center of giving HOPE to the child through her warmth.

We support children in the treatment of Congenital Heart Defects across geography of India. India’s cultural and demographic diversity gives us diverse experience in our mission to Save Little Hearts. But Care ethics is an integral part of mothers who never fail to amaze us with their strength, resilience, and determination to stand strong for their children, come what may. One such is a story of a mother who fought with all her fears and insecurities in seeking treatment for her child. She shared with us that, ever since she got married, she has been confined to her household tasks and barely stepped out of her house or even for that matter to her rooftop. But when she learned that her daughter had a congenital heart defect, she rushed from one doctor to another all by herself until she could meet a doctor at one of our partner hospitals, who helped with the precise diagnosis and treatment for the child. Once she found the doctor, she then threw herself in finding someone who would give a congenital heart disease donation. She was surrounded by darkness and hopelessness when she discovered the cost of surgery but did not give up. And as we say that where there is a will, there is a way. Learning about her financial struggles, our doctor at our partner hospital introduced her to Genesis Foundation and we supported the courageous mother and her little heart to give life a chance. The mother expressed her heartfelt gratitude for not just supporting her child but also empowering her in this journey of saving a life. Stories like hers are a constant reminder of our mission and motivation for going strong.

We salute the incredible power of a mother’s love

Mother is an Emotion

We often take the word ‘Mother’ quite literally. But our experiences have time and again made us realize, that ‘mother’ is not just a relation but an emotion which is not bound by biological connect only. One of our supported kids had this emotion being displayed by her ‘Maasi’ or maternal aunt. The child was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect at the tender age of 1 year. She was falling sick frequently and facing development delays. Her mother was not in good health to take her along and seek consultations from doctors. Her maternal aunt came to the forefront and took the onus of getting her niece treated. She was someone who had not stepped outside of her village alone but for her niece she mustered the courage and went 462 Kms to attend one of the camps organized by Genesis Foundation. There her niece underwent a 2D echo which confirmed a rare congenital heart defect that required immediate clinical intervention. We supported the child at one of our partner hospitals in Gurgaon and her maternal aunt stayed there for entire duration of surgery all by herself and finally took her niece home with all smiles and gratitude to doctors and GF team for this generous and timely support. This story is a testimony that ‘mother’ is an emotion and not just a biological relation.

Mother is an emotion

Going a step beyond is the story of a child who was raised and taken care of by her grandparents. For her grandparents she was the world and reason to live. They could see their past and imagine their future, keeping her at the center of their life. The child faced frequent cold and fever and experienced bluish discoloration. Initially with recurring cold and fever, they consulted the general physician considering her weak immunity but when they noticed the bluish discoloration of the skin, they were clueless. She consulted a pediatrician who suggested an Echo. the Grandmother was heartbroken when she learned that her granddaughter had a congenital heart defect. She kept on consulting doctors for the treatment, but the huge cost of surgery came her way in seeking the treatment. She did not give up and kept trying sources for a congenital heart disease donation. One day, her neighbors informed her about one of our partner hospitals treating children with such heart defects and their association with an NGO working for congenital heart disease. She reached out to the doctors and remained a constant support till her granddaughter underwent surgery. The child is now in good health and has resumed school. The grandmother often calls us to say thanks for the support and shares pictures and videos of her progress.

All these mothers and their stories of courage and resilience are a constant source of motivation for our unwavering commitment to Save Little Hearts.
