Haryana is frequently touted as an example of India’s economic aspirations, exhibiting a high per capita income, a large agricultural production base, and fast-growing urbanization; yet, behind all these economic benefits hides a very disturbing truth regarding child health in the state of Haryana.<\/p>\n

Many of the same common vulnerabilities that all children face throughout their respective early development exist in Haryana, however, in addition to these vulnerabilities, children living in Haryana are also exposed to a much greater vulnerability than other parts of India, due to a complete lack of matching healthcare output to economic growth, which has been taking place in Haryana over the past 30 years.<\/p>\n

NGOs<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>in<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>Haryana<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0now\u00a0taking\u00a0steps\u00a0to\u00a0reduce\u00a0the\u00a0gap\u00a0between\u00a0economic\u00a0output and quality of childcare through providing nutritional assistance, access to clean drinking water, and improving the general knowledge about basic health and wellness.<\/p>\n

The Numbers That Cannot Be <\/b><\/strong>Ignored<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

According to a report by Tribune India<\/i><\/em>, the latest state data: 40% of children in Haryana are underweight; 28% are stunted;\u00a0and\u00a072%\u00a0of\u00a0children\u00a0are\u00a0affected\u00a0by\u00a0anaemia,\u00a0the\u00a0highest\u00a0rates\u00a0in\u00a0India.\u00a0Although\u00a0the majority of children in India live in rural areas, government spending on health has not increased over the last decade, and since India has one of the lowest levels of public expenditure\u00a0on\u00a0health\u00a0relative\u00a0to\u00a0GDP,\u00a0many\u00a0parents\u00a0cannot\u00a0afford\u00a0the\u00a0costs\u00a0associated\u00a0with accessing health care.<\/p>\n

In addition, the burden of congenital heart disease (CHD),<\/u><\/a> adds another dimension to the public health crisis in Haryana. More than 200,000 children are born with congenital heart defects (CHDs) every year in India, and of these, approximately 1\/5 will have a serious defect requiring surgery during the first year of life (Congenital Heart Disease in India: A Status Report, by Anita Saxena<\/i><\/em>).<\/p>\n

Despite the medical advances, currently only a small percentage of children with CHDs have accessible cardiac care due to the lack of resources.<\/p>\n

NGOs Stepping into the <\/b><\/strong>Gap<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

Across\u00a0Haryana,\u00a0several\u00a0organizations\u00a0are\u00a0doing\u00a0meaningful,\u00a0documented\u00a0work\u00a0to\u00a0address these challenges:<\/p>\n

  2. The Pardada Pardadi Educational Society: <\/strong>The majority of their work is with adolescentgirls in the state to execute health programs that address several of the underlying causes of high rates of anaemia and malnutrition.<\/li>\n
  3. The Samarpan Foundation: <\/strong>They seek to connect families in rural Haryana to government health care entitlements and programs, thereby creating more equitable accessto publicly funded health care facilities, particularly for children and families in rural areas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
