\"The<\/p>\n

The Congenital Heart Surgeon is a rare breed of doctor. It is a difficult career starting with a decade of training, and a lifelong journey of empathy and learning. It is as rewarding as it is demanding, and mental satisfaction and mental and physical stress go inseparably hand in hand.<\/p>\n

What does it take to make a pediatric heart surgeon? Passion is one common factor among all of us. The basic prerequisites are the desire to succeed despite all odds, and a resignation to the fact that you will not taste the fruit of your labour till you are in your late 30s- early 40s. <\/p>\n

So, what drives one to choose this profession? Some answers can be found in the story of my journey. Even as a student, I was fascinated by the idea of offering children heart treatment<\/a> to those in need.<\/p>\n

If I had to write a blog on my career it would actually be a chronicle of my journey. What were my guiding spirits when the seed was sown and who inspired me and how? There were two people who silently inspired me by just leading their life the way they did. <\/p>\n

Firstly, my maternal grandfather, the late Sri. M.K. Narasimha Reddy. He was my first big inspiration in life. He was a farmer in a small village in Andhra Pradesh who used to cultivate mangos, coconut and sugarcane. To call him a perfectionist would be an understatement. He was very well read; he used to read The Reader’s Digest magazine and The Hindu newspaper from beginning to end, and this was from way back in the 1970s or even earlier. He used to attend conferences all over the country with relation to agriculture. He was also a big cricket buff, never missing an opportunity to watch a Test match anywhere in South India. Last, but not least, he was a World War 2 veteran. What inspired me most about him was his perfection and passion. He would know every tree in his gardens in and out, and he had multiple gardens- almost 7 or 8. So he knew which tree would give how much fruit, what kind of fruit, what he needed to do to improve every single tree\u2019s output, etc., and he used to spend the whole day, walking about a dozen kilometers, to inspect all his gardens. I learnt from him what passion truly is, and what perfection means in one’s life.<\/p>\n

This quest for perfection was bolstered many years later by my beloved high school teacher Mr. Venkatesh GM. A tutor to thousands of school kids, a mentor to hundreds, and an inspiration for at least three generations, he was instrumental in redefining my goals and unleashing my potential. He is so revered in my eyes that he holds the position of Godfather, a person who even today rescues me from difficulties and is my pillar of strength.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

The next big inspiration was my father, the late Dr. B. Krishnamurthy Reddy. He was a physician beyond compare who changed hundreds of lives, and even today countless people love and remember him with affection for the comfort and hope he brought them in their most difficult times. A Radiation Oncologist and cancer specialist, he spent his entire career till retirement to working in government service despite the continuous allure of more lucrative opportunities. His motto was simple: service. He consistently went above and beyond- not only for the patients who came to him, but also for the people back in his hometown who had no means of advanced medical care. He is fondly remembered by his patients and by the many students he mentored, for his calm presence, empathy, unwavering support and deep compassion. I remember him most of all for his service attitude, to put money aside and use your knowledge and skill to help the less fortunate around you. This instilled in me a desire to provide child heart treatment<\/a> to those who cannot afford it.<\/p>\n

Having thus grown up in this atmosphere, it was natural that I wanted to be a doctor and serve humankind. Strangely enough, I had decided I am going to be a heart surgeon while I was in middle school. The distinct memory of my fellow 7th standard friends calling me \u201cdil ka doctor<\/a>\u201d is one of my most cherished ones. I was drawn to the field by its unique blend of technical mastery- something I felt few other surgical specialties could match- and by the assurance that each time I applied my skills, I could experience the profound satisfaction of a life saved and a job well done.<\/p>\n

I strongly believe my journey to be a divine pre-ordinance. There have been multiple events which suggested this in my life. But the two most important ones are me ending up at Amrita, far from my home, Bangalore, and my wife Sruthi coming into my life.<\/p>\n

Amrita is a magnetic cauldron with enigmatic charisma. It attracts like-minded people to come together and be a part of something bigger than life. The divine grace is palpable in every nook and cranny, and spirituality is all prevailing. But that\u2019s not why our team is here. We are a proud group, a large one at that, of passionate and motivated doctors determined to offer our services only at world-class levels of excellence, whatever the personal costs. And we have been able to deliver that consistently for over a decade.<\/p>\n

This has attracted many philanthropists and like-minded people who want to serve mankind and want to do it in the best way possible. And all this we have been able to achieve at a fraction of the cost it takes, thanks to the immense help from our hospital administration and the many departments who go out of the way to ensure medical costs are kept at the bare minimum without compromises in quality.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

Perfection in doing things I love has always been my strength. The dream of doing cardiac surgery was something I envisioned even as a child. The complexity of the procedures and the dexterity needed for the profession is something which always had me in awe. This profession has been demanding in many ways. This led to compromises in my other karmas, of being a father, a husband, and a son. This is where I feel especially blessed to have my wife Sruthi in my life. She is an epitome of compassion and patience and has wowed so many people to become her die-hard fans. Nothing in my life would be possible without her.<\/p>\n

Once I became a cardiac surgeon<\/a> I wanted to specialize in pediatric cardiac surgery<\/a>. The satisfaction of seeing a sick baby instantly rejuvenated is something to die for. And we have this blessing every single day of our lives.<\/p>\n

The challenge is immense. Heart defects in newborns<\/a> and pre-terms are especially challenging and common in our center, and one can only imagine the intricacies of their anatomy. A baby barely nudging one or two kilograms in weight, the heart as small as 3 centimeters, having issues with its pipes or valves\u2026 for a person outside the doors of the operation theatre, this is left to their world of imagination. With magnifying surgical loupes strapped to the head and a strong light focusing on the heart, each and every cut we make, each and every stitch we take has no room for error. The pressure is immense and teamwork is crucial, and there is divine grace as we strive to better the future of this tiny life.<\/p>\n

The most important contribution in our daily success is from my mother and our dear Amma. A mother\u2019s sacrifices, her silent prayers, her resilience, her ability to know everything and always be there, and her divine blessings, those are the shoulders we lean on, the balm to calm our frail nerves when things go wrong, and our source of courage to strive to reach new heights.<\/p>\n
