We are a patchwork quilt of different aspects of our lives-personal, professional, spiritual, and emotional. These threads are what make us beautifully unique. One thread that beautifies my life is volunteering. The feeling of doing something for another brings a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. These are the exact emotions I underwent during my experience volunteering for Genesis Foundation, a children heart foundation.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

I had the opportunity to do a hospital visit at one of Genesis Foundations\u2019 partner hospitals<\/a> to meet baby Tina (name changed). She is a 2-year-old girl who underwent life-saving heart surgery. Despite being 2 years old, she was under 10 kg and faced difficulties in weight gain, breathing and other cognitive developments. When I reached the hospital, I encountered the parents and had a chat with them. They had sought help at their local hospital, where the echocardiogram diagnosed her with congenital heart disease (CHD)<\/a>. The anxious parents watched YouTube videos<\/a> in search of help and educated themselves regarding this defect. Then, they came across a video of a doctor at that partner hospital who suggested the case to Genesis Foundation, and we were able to step in and offer support.<\/p>\n

When I visited her, I gifted her a toy – a colorful building block. She was mesmerized by the toy and its colors. It was satisfying to see that despite going through such tedious surgery, at such a tender age, she still had that mischief and child-like nature within her. In my brief interaction with the highly regarded pediatric cardiologist, he seemed helpful, approachable, and a philanthropist. On the other hand, the hospital staff were warm, responsive, and always ready to help. We played with Tina, clicked a few photos for memories and made testimonials for spreading awareness.<\/p>\n

When the parents thanked Genesis Foundation, the best NGO in Haryana, for financing the surgery, I felt something shift within me. It was heartbreaking to witness the worry and concern of the parents. I didn’t fundraise; I didn’t do the treatment. I was just there, and still I felt a sense of wholeness which I have never felt before. I felt so grateful and humble to have a \u2018normal\u2019 childhood and cannot imagine the indescribable pain that Tina has gone through. For the past month, I had only studied congenital heart defect (CHD) in theory \u2014 through reports<\/a>, documents, and case files. However, seeing its impact firsthand was a completely different experience. My heart goes out to all the brave children who have battled CHD as well as to the families who have lost their child because of it. I can only imagine the emotional, financial, and logistical toll it must have taken for them to travel all the way from their hometown to the hospital, and their journey isn\u2019t over yet. After witnessing Tina\u2019s journey, CHD feels painfully real and no longer a medical term, but a human story. It reminded me how fragile life can be, and how empathy and hope connect us all.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

The father vouched that had it not been for Genesis Foundation, they were hopeless, worried and would face extreme financial difficulties. Tina is one of the many children that Genesis Foundation, a children heart foundation, has helped. Genesis Foundation has not restrained itself to surgeries; in fact, they follow up with the family for 3 years after the surgery. They have a dedicated team<\/a> of employees, volunteers, and donors who passionately believe in this cause and will support the patient\u2019s journey. Over the last 24 years, they have supported over 5,100 children battling congenital heart disease. They provide end-to-end support<\/a> from setting up screening camps, to funding surgeries, to spreading awareness ,to follow up with parents for 3 years post-surgery. Genesis Foundation works by the mission that no child should be deprived of their future due to a lack of funds.<\/p>\n

Volunteering<\/a> helps in reflecting and self-introspection. It bursts your bubble and makes you aware of your surroundings and struggles of life. It helps in spreading awareness, building community, and making an impact in society. After my life-altering experience of volunteering with Genesis Foundation, I would recommend that everybody volunteer as well.<\/p>\n
