Harshita Gidwani was 10 years old when she was referred to us, by Thalassemics India for support. Harshita had to depend on blood transfusions to be able to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

Harshita a grade 6 student at Shri Sanatan Dharam Education Center, Kanpur, is passionate about dance and enjoys an outdoor life. An intelligent girl, she is always amongst the top 5 in her class. Her hobbies are drawing, dancing and playing badminton.

Her father Mahendra Gidwani who had a fruit shop was only able to earn Rs. 3000 a month. He had to take several loans in order to deal with the regular blood transfusions that were required for her treatment . Her mother Neha is a home maker who in addition to Harshita, has two other children to care for.

The doctors at CMC Vellore recommended immediate Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). Luckily, her sister was a HLA match and served as a donor. The estimated cost of BMT was Rs.12, 00,000 which the family could not afford. They however managed to collect Rs.3,00,000 . Genesis Foundation with the support of a donor from Switzerland – Impag AG helped save the life of this child by donating Rs.9,00,000 for her treatment. Her surgery took place in May 2009, she is today recovered and enjoys a normal life.

We thank Impag AG, Zurich for their support in helping Save a Life

The family knew they were unable to deal with the cost of surgery and approached the hospital for help. NHI undertakes assistance for underprivileged cases like these and subsidizes the cost of surgery. As GF has a tie up with National Heart Institute contribution of Rs.50,000 was given towards the cost of Aman’s surgery in Dec 2006.
However the cost of the supplementary medicines and antibiotics was more than the free drugs supplied by Max Foundation & Novartis. GF agreed to support her treatment. Cost to the Foundation was over Rs.30,000.

On March 22, 2005 Geeta was released from AIIMS after being hospitalized for over 2 months. The baby was admitted to AIIMS where she fought for her life and survived. An NGO volunteered to take the baby girl under their care and contacted the Genesis Foundation to support the treatment. The road to recovery was long and Anamika needed to undergo a series of cosmetic reconstructive surgeries over the next 10/12 years of her life. She underwent her first surgery at the Apollo Hospital under Dr. Shahin Nooreyezdin, who performed two surgeries in a span of 10 days and free of cost. Due to Mickey Bharucha’s(Genesis Foundation) contacts with the hospital she approached Dr Pratap C Reddy for help. The Foundation incurred a cost of app Rs.14, 000 for the first surgery.
On November 11, 2009, 3-year-old Pappu entered PALNA. He was quiet, listless and hardly smiled. Dr. Veronica Shah, Palna’s medical consultant, found him having breathing difficulties and the tests revealed and it was found that he needed urgent heart surgery.

The team went into action – a heart surgeon was identified, and wonder of wonders, Genesis Foundation offered to bear the cost of the surgery and hospitalisation. Dr Dagar and his team operated on Pappu on December 22, 2009 and Pappu came home on December 28, 2009. He is doing well as the pictures below will show. His smile tells it all!

On January 16, 2010, the Goodwill Ambassador for Genesis Foundation, Ms Parvathy OmanaKuttan (Miss India 2008 and first runner up of Miss World 2008) visited Pappu at Palna and spent a happy hour with the children. God Bless You All.

Haripal blows out the candles on his cake and laughs with delight as his brothers and sisters break into ‘Happy Birthday…’ Along with presents, his new family has picked special birthday gifts for him – along with bags full of love and affection.

Trapped between moments of lucidity and periods of silences, Haripal has finally arrived home. And he has been truly blessed with a loving family and caring, concerned siblings.

The child who was thrown into a dry well by a drunken father and abandoned at a hospital in Delhi by relatives unable to cope with his broken body and damaged mind today seems to be at peace with the world in far away California, USA.

Brought to the Missionaries of Charity orphanage in 1985, at the age of five, Haripal was completely bed ridden as every major bone in his body been broken or dislocated. The next few years were spent in and out of hospitals, cared for by the nuns at the home in San Francisco. Despite being able to communicate only in broken Hindi whenever he was in the mood to communicte, Haripal spent most of his day motionless, locked in a world all of his own that precluded almost human interaction.

When Mark was escorted to the home run by the nuns of Missionaries of Charity in Delhi, his first encounter was with Haripal who had been set outside to catch a bit of winter sun. Mark was deeply moved by this broken, motionless eight-year old whose eyes followed him. It was obvious that unless something was done this was all Haripal’s life would ever amount to.

Back in the USA, Mark contacted Shriver’s Hospital for Crippled Children, a charitable specialist centre, considered one of the leading facilities for orthopedic care.

The doctors agreed to consider Haripal’s case and asked for his dossier. To complete his medical files, Haripal was admitted into AIIMS, India’s leading medical facility for two stretches of three weeks each. Literally carried from department to department, Haripal’s medical report was completed and sent to Shriner’s , who agreed to take him on if a place to stay before and after the multiple surgeries could be found for him. Did Haripal realise that his life was about to change dramatically? Did he sense destiny taking its course? If Haripal crooning all the way from AIIMS and back, to and from the home is any indication, certainly he could feel something extraordinary taking charge of his life. The Missionaries of Charity based at San Francisco agreed to take him in and care for him.

What remained was the fare to San Francisco. As he was entirely bed-ridden, and would have to travel in a stretcher, about 5 seats would need to be removed so as to accommodate the stretcher. A particular airline official agreed to get some special sanctions for Haripal’s ticket to be equivalent to two full fares instead of five. God Bless this official as he himself died of cancer some years later.

Being unable to care for himself or communicate in any language except Hindi, Haripal would need an attendant to accompany him. Again, where was the money to come from? Well wishers were mobilised, trusts contacted, individuals approached, corporate petitioned, and within a couple of months the money accumulated, bringing Haripal closer to the semblance of a normal, more humane existence.

In August 1989, Haripal had two operations to reposition his leg that had fused into the pelvis, and that made it possible for him to sit up. His perspective re-aligned by the simple act of being able to sit up, soon, the little boy in a red wheel chair became a familiar sight, fussed over and adored by the hospital staff and the various volunteers that stepped in to help out.

Learning to make himself understood in English was a challenge that Haripal took on with the help of the nuns who looked after him during his recuperative period. Slowly, in an alien land, he learned to interact with others around him. To express his joy in an existence few of us can imagine. However, despite the care lavished on him, what he needed was a family and after a couple of false starts, Haripal did find one.

The Blakes, visited Haripal at the home regularly. They had a number of natural and (in their terminology) supernatural children. They wished that Haripal could be another supernatural child. Haripal learned to swim and attends school regularly. His older brothers and sisters dote on him and he is not complaining.

Today, Haripal is happy and well cared for. His electric wheel chair allows his undreamed of mobility. Loved and cherished, his life has changed completely. Does Haripal understand the odds against which he has made this amazing journey? Is it necessary that he should? The happiness that he experiences splashing in the pool, at family get-togethers, the joy of finding himself in this place far from the land of his birth – is it not vindication enough? The answers do not concern Haripal; what does is that a little concern and caring has touched and changed his life, forever.

It is this spirit of caring and concern that lies at the core of Genesis Foundation.

And more children must benefit from simple intervention, for a miracle to happen and change the course of their life forever.

Well, not quite. There are days when Mary gazes into the mirror and wonders at the confident, youthful, American woman whose eyes speak of the incredible journey that Mary has made.

Mary’s story begins in tribal Madhya Pradesh. Born in 1968, Mary was the youngest of three sisters and two brothers. Her father was a marginal farmer, barely able to eke out a living from the soil, while her mother was already losing the battle that would take her life and turn Mary into a living wreck.

The first recorded reference to Mary places her at the orphanage run by Missionaries of Charity at Delhi. She was eight years old with sever facial disfigurement that had completely eroded her self-confidence as she was growing up. While she made herself useful around the orphanage, did she ever imagine that life could ever have any other dimension or direction? That she too could step beyond the secure confines of the home to build a life of her own?

Over the next decade, Mary was in and out of hospitals. Corrective surgery was necessary to enable her to eat and breathe properly. Slowly she learned to communicate and to cope with her situation.

Around the time that Mary was undergoing corrective surgery for the fourth time, and Naveen*, an eight-year old ward of the orphanage, unable to even sit up was declared ‘untreatable’, Mark was in India from USA for a holiday. His desire to see the ‘real India’ brought him to the home run by Missionaries of Charity for destitute and orphaned children. While Mark was moved by the dedicated and self-less devotion of the nuns belonging to Mother Teresa’s order, what affected him deeply was the plight of these children who were medically challenged.

It was apparent that only concerned, individual intervention could make a worthwhile difference to the lives of these children. Mary was already seventeen – on the threshold of adulthood; and what did she have to look forward to? What about young Naveen?

Back, in the USA, the images continued to haunt Mark. Could anything be done? Could these children be gifted a more meaningful existence?

In his search for viable treatment and options, Mark contacted Interplast, a non-profit organisation founded by Dr Laub, dedicated to bringing the benefits of corrective plastic surgery to those who could not afford it. A renowned plastic surgeon, Dr Laub has brought normalcy to the lives of hundred of people all over the world.

When the Interplast team viewed Mary’s photographs, they were positive that their planned interventions would not only solve the attendant medical problems, but also grant her a more ‘normal’ appearance. This organisation based in California offered to perform a series of six operations free of cost. As the operations would stretch over a year, Mary needed a place to stay. The Smith family was identified as surrogate family for Mary. Harven and Nancy not only had children of their own, they also had adopted children from Asian countries and were willing to take Mary into their home for the duration of her stay.

Slowly but surely, the mills of destiny were turning for Mary. Practically illiterate, unable to communicate in English, virtually penniless, sorely in need of corrective facial surgery – Mary was on her way to a new life.

While the medical expenses and stay had been arranged, where was the money for the ticket to come from? Support was mobilised in the form of donations that swelled to cover a return ticket, clothes, suitcase, tote bag, shoes and attendant paraphernalia so essential for travel. Mary moved into a well-wisher’s home to get the ‘feel’ of living with a family. At seventeen, she had to re-learn everything she had known. Inter- personal relationships, interaction, social skills – a bewildering new world.

While Mary’s skin was being stretched and grafted, nose rebuilt, eye ducts rectified, her mind was undergoing an even more radical change. Bouts of surgery were interspersed with adult literacy classes. Learning to speak English, read it, write it, struggling with the ever-changing dynamics of family life, away from the cloistered retreat of her growing years. Dealing with the homesickness that assailed her from time to time. Discovering the joys of bowling and swimming.

Caught between two worlds, Mary found in herself the courage to crossover. The tenacity and endurance that had seen her through so much and the links she had forged over the years kept her going.

The Smith family’s offer of board and lodging soon evolved into an offer of full-fledged adult adoption. Papers had to be sent from India, affidavits signed, permissions granted. Finally, Mother Teresa’s intervention was sought to open America’s doors for Mary. A decade after her arrival, Mary became an American citizen. In due course, and in true American tradition, she met and married the man of her dreams. And now is a proud mother of bouncing, healthy boy! Today, as she makes her grocery lists, visits malls, drives her son around, does she stop to think what a stranger’s concern set into motion?

Mary’s life is a modern day miracle, a hosanna to the power of one human being’s concern for another.
